Nothing so beautiful as a cigarette still lit –
Precious moments between creeping glow and filter hilt.

A disciple of Dunbar’s theory knows,
Embracing moments of tedium is life extended ad infinitum.

But that ember does creep.
Every dawn ends in sleep.
Wail at the watch, and what it does keep.

For what every beginning makes endless,
Time renders meaningless.
